VOGUE
Dates:
Saturday, June 13, 2020, 6:00 pm to Saturday, September 26, 2020, 8:00 pm
In partnership with Van Vogue Jam and independent artists, we are bringing a series of vogue, performance, and arts workshops to a screen near you!
Carrying on from the COVID-cancelled workshops with Ralph Escamillan (Van Vogue Jam), the new series will start Saturday, June 13th on Zoom, offering the chance to work directly with Ralph to learn the history of the ballroom and practice the elements of Vogue. In addition to these monthly vogue workshops, the project is expanding to include a series of associated workshops presented once a month by a rotating crew of artists.
From vogue to drag, embroidery, and storytelling, tune in to celebrate and learn from the abundant artistry of QTBIPoC creators.

Accessibility:
Our commitment to accessibility includes all barriers to access. Do you feel comfortable in the space? Do you need more food available? Do you need dimmer lighting? Are we failing to accommodate your accessibility tech such as screen-readers? Do you need someone to walk home with you? Do you usually work on Saturday evenings? Do you need an interpreter?
If your accessibility needs, or the accessibility needs of someone you know are not being met, please fill out our accessibility feedback form at https://forms.gle/hyRrU4KyxuXxmepf6, or contact office [at] openspace.ca.
Ballroom Culture:
Although it is now practiced internationally, vogue and ballroom culture emerged out of New York’s queer and trans Black and Latinx communities from the 1970s onward, who responded to the hostility and racism of white America by forming their own inclusive spaces. Balls were and continue to be a safe space among urban nightlife where QTBIPoC folks can gather. As such, these sessions will prioritize the safety, comfort, and presence of QTBIPoC participants. These sessions are FREE and open to people of all ages, abilities, genders, sexualities, and ethnicities. No dance experience necessary!
Expectations:
In working to make this a safe space, we will not tolerate harassment, including expressions of racism, ableism, homoantagonism, transantagonism, transmisogyny, whorephobia, and body-shaming. We ask that participants reflect on their position and the space they take up, practice consent in all interactions, and please contact us either during or afte
